How to Specify an Industrial Chain and Sprocket Set

Start with the complete drive

A chain and sprocket set should be specified as a system. Record the driver, driven equipment, speed, load, starts, reversals, available center distance, shaft arrangement, and enclosure. A chain size copied from an old link may not be enough when the sprockets are worn, alignment has changed, or the duty has increased.

  • Identify chain pitch, roller width, strand count, and attachment pattern.
  • Record sprocket tooth count, bore, keyway, hub style, and shaft position.
  • Describe lubrication, contamination, corrosion, and maintenance access.

Check the interfaces

Measure both sprockets and shafts, not only the chain. Confirm whether the sprocket is finished bore, pilot bore, taper-lock, QD, welded hub, split, or another arrangement. Photograph markings and the installed orientation. For conveying chains, include the attachment spacing and the carried product.

Chain data Pitch, roller, inner width, plate, strand, attachment, and length
Sprocket data Teeth, bore, key, hub, pitch diameter constraint, and material
Duty data Power, speed, load variation, starts, shock, alignment, and hours

Prepare the RFQ

Send the measurements, photographs, machine function, quantity, destination, and required documentation. For a new design, provide the motor, speed, driven load, center distance, layout, and preferred maintenance arrangement.
